Thanks to the personal digital assistant (PDA), true business mobility has finally become a reality. For many areas, a whole new world of opportunities is opening up – and a whole new world of risks.
The very fact that PDAs are so portable means they are easily lost or stolen, along with the confidential data saved on them. In addition, Plug and Play functionality and wireless connection capabilities make them a serious threat to the security of company networks.
Current PDAs are not equipped to combat these risks, so comprehensive protective measures are imperative. SafeGuard PDA provides the protection that is needed and keeps the mobile workforce secure. The strong encryption keeps data confidential – even in transit over the Internet.
Transparent background operation means users do not need training or elaborate new work routines. And easy central implementation and enforcement of the company security policy keep the environment consistently protected.
User convenience is critical in any authentication solution. SafeGuard PDA meets this requirement and is the optimal choice for companies that must enforce a PDA security policy via central administration along with efficient recovery functions.
Installation
This section contains a short instruction to how to install the product. The process is described in detail in the administrator manual, which is on the product CD.
Administration (Windows PC):
• Copy the "Administration" folder from the product CD onto your hard disk and remove the read-only file attributes from the copied files. This is needed for the Company Key Generation tool, see next step.

Run the Company Key Wizard, "SGCompanyKey.exe", and create a company key file (sgpda.cky). Copy this file to the smartphone (for Nokia devices create a directory called "c:\utimaco". For SonyEricsson create a directory called "C:\documents\Media files\document\Utimaco").
• Install the SafeGuard PDA Administration installer package on the PC. This registers a Microsoft Management Console Snap-In for administration and also extracts an administrative template.
• Run the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) and add "<program files>\Utimaco\adm\SGuard.adm" to the list of administrative templates. Configuration options for SafeGuard PDA can now be found in "User Configuration / Administrative Templates / SafeGuard PDA".

In the Group Policy Editor, go to "User Configuration / Windows Settings / SafeGuard PDA" and choose "Master Password" to change the master password. The original master password is "SGPDA".

Create a security policy configuration file: in the Group Policy Editor, go to "User Configuration / Windows Settings / SafeGuard PDA" and choose "Export Symbian Configuration File" to save the settings you made earlier to a file called "sgpda.cfg". Copy the file to the smartphone (for Nokia devices create a directory called "c:\utimaco", for SonyEricsson create a directory called "C:\documents\Media files\document\Utimaco").
Client (Symbian smartphone):
• We recommend that you make a backup copy of your smartphone before you install SafeGuard PDA!

Copy the configuration file and company key file to the smartphone: for Nokia the directory is "c:\utimaco", and for SonyEricsson it is "C:\documents\Media files\document\Utimaco".
• By using the tools shipped with your smartphone, install the SafeGuard PDA SIS file on the smartphone. The SIS files for the supported devices are stored in the "Clients" folder on the product CD. Be sure to choose the correct SIS file for your smartphone.
NOTES:
• The initial Master Password for the SafeGuard PDA Enterprise Edition is: "SGPDA". Be sure to change it (with the SG PDA master password snap-in in the Microsoft Management Console) when starting to use the software in productive environments.
• If you installed a previous version of SG PDA Enterprise, using a special company key, be sure to apply the same company key to this installation package before distribution. The new installation package will overwrite the old package during upgrade.
